I have an 89 240sx with the KA engine I just replaced the head gasket and had the head rebuilt engine runs great now however I am having some confusing problems with overheating. Temp gauge in car always shows car running at normal temps and but about a week ago when I turned the car off I heard the reserve bottle boiling. come to find out I had lost most of the coolant due to a hole in the lower radiator hose so I fixed that. But then I noticed that my water pump was leaking coolant. however it would only leak when the car was turned off. when it was running it wouldn't leak anything then 2 days ago it just stopped leaking. I don't know what to do or if this is a common problem or not aloso don't know what to do about the coolant temp not showing that the car is overheating. I am afraid that I am going to blow another headgasket if I don't get this figured out soon. Someone Please help me. I am at a loss for what to do?

when you replaced the headgasket, was it overheated before that?, also if the water pump started leaking, replace it.

do a compression test also just incase, to let you maybe know if you have a bad headgasket or not.

Did you resurfaced the head and block?Did you checked the head for warpage?Did you bleed the air properly after adding coolant?

Also replace the water pump or just the gasket for it, and when you reflush your system make sure you get all the air bubbles out. On our cars it's really simple do to the bleeder screw we have on the intake manifold .

Also if you said you had water boiling in your overflow tank but your car didnt show that it's overheating replace your thermostat. Cause whats happening there is the coolant is getting hot, but the thermo is not opening so hot coolant is forced into the overflow tank.

This is what was explaind to me when I had the exact same problem as you, so I went ahed replaced my water pump, reflushed my system, replaced the thermo, and my car is golden now.
