Overheating problems.

I was driving highway speed earlier today. about 55. and I noticed this really wierd smell, like cinimin or something, then I started to smell antifreeze. I looked up at the temp gauge and it was pegged to hot side. I pulled over, opened the hood and noticed radiator fluid was everywhere and the cap was loose, almost off. I was like wtf. anywaze, I filled it up with water, as it still had some antifreeze in it and put the cap back on, drove it up the road and it pegged again. Does anyone thing that I messed something up? maybe its the cap itself? or the waterpump? im cornfused...
