I drive a 1992 Nissan 240sx auto. During a cold day I was going to pick up some christmas gifts right as Im in the parking and abuot to get into a parking spot my temp gauge shoots up and there was a whole bunch of steam coming out from the hood, I had a look, saw it was the rad so I restarted to drive it into the parking spot now at this time the temp gauge was normal. I got a free tow to the garage, turns out there was a crack in the radiator tank, now after looking all over for used rads and trying to get a new tank that didnt work, so I let them put in a new rad for me at their shop, and I just got a call back from the guy today and he tells me its still overheating, he doesnt even know what the problem is he thinks it maybe the thermostat, or could it just be air in the system? I mean when I restarted it in the parking lot it wasnt overheating, the heat was fine. Any ideas on what would cause this?

Ok so heres an update: I went to go pick up my car with the new rad and drove it home, it didnt overheat it stayed cool. Now the problem is I went to start it again before I went in the house and it didnt turn over. Anybody know what this problem could be?

The thermostat may be stuck closed. The guy I bought my 240 from had a thermostat that was stuck closed so instead of replacing the old one he just took it out and didnt even put one back in, but that fixed the problem.

probally 8/10ths of the time no heat and over heating can be linked to air in your cooling system. my car started to overheat and there wasn't any hot air and i found it to be a lose belt clamp. i say check all hoses for any lose clamps or leaks. then check the thermo. you could also try flushing the system. and let us know how you fised your problem, good luck
