no such thing as an overheating light.
maybe you have mistaken the low coolant light for the overheating light?
there is a level switch in the coolant overflow tank. the coolant level in the engine/radiator can be good, but if the overflow tank is low, it will trip the light.
with the engine COLD, check the coolant level in the radiator [remove the radiator cap]. if the level is low, begin filling the cooling system with coolant [50/50 mix].
start the engine, and put the heat on full blast. let the engine run with the radiator cap removed. air should surface, allowing you to add more coolant. once the upper radiator hose begins to become warm, add as much coolant to the radiator as possible.
once it is as full as you can get it, replace the radiator cap.
now fill the coolant overflow tank up to the halfway mark.
drive the car for a little while.
