I recently changed my radiator in my 89 240sx (i have also recently changed the water pump and both upper and lower rad hoses). I filled it up with just water becuse I had no antifreeze. Now, a week later, I emptied out the water and filled it up with 50:50 antifreeze. I bled the system but not with the car on. Now its overheating and fluid is spurting out right by the thermostat housing. Is there another hose in there that I dont know about.

Did you not use RTV or anything?

You are most likely over heating because of the leak...

There are coolant lines behind the engine. If its leaking right at the housing though, then I would take it off and reseal it.

Well I can't see exactly where the water is coming from, but it looks like right next to the alternator. It's funny once the engine warms up it sits at a good temp for about 5 or 10 minutes, then it rapidly overheats. I turn the car off of course, and the coolant starts coming out (into the reservoir too). Then I let it sit for 10 minutes to cool down, then fired it up and drove it. After that it did not overheat (I probably drove it for 10 minutes, while the temp sits at a normal level) and no more coolant leaked out. But the next day, it did the exact same thing all over again.

Its lookin like the thermostat housing is leaking. Maybe it's cracked? About time for a new thermostat and housing anyway since everything else in the cooling system is new.

If you can't find a replacement find the leak and JBweld it.

yeah thats probly a good idea. I'm gonna take off the entire housing tho and change the sta inside cuz its so cheap. easier to weld the housing when its out of the car anyways.

Just to be sure, is there anything else that could be leaking water around the thermostat housing? I just don't wanna take it off if I don't have to. I changed the lower rad hose recently too so I doubt its that.

when you bleed out the coolant system it helps quite a bit to do it on an incline.i usually jack the front end up and set it on stands. also there are coolant lines that go into and out of your intake manifold and throttlebody, you could have pinched or punctured one of those lines.

yeah maybe one of those blew. Its so hard to figure out on the SOHC cuz the oil pump is right in the way. makes changing the stat way more difficult.

yeah I think that's the same hose for me, although I can't see exactly. It could be coming out of the thermostat housing too. I'm gonna heat it up again and try to pinpoint the leak.
God speed!
