Just like the title says... I know what parts I need but I am wondering what work I should get done at a machine shop for a 120k motor that I plan on making a daily driver KA-T for as long as possible.

If anyone knows any prices please let me know it will be helpful when I setup my budget.

Wow all my parts to do KA-T excluding getting a ka24de and machine shop work is about $4200

Edit: that also excludes all my transmission work as well

Just to give you an idea on price, I didn't have any exotic engine work done, and my labor bill was ~$740. Without looking at my invoice, it was a stock check/rebuild:

Short block tear down, hottank, 'prep', block mag'd, check pisiton bore, hone, crank magnaflux/polish, main journal line check, head recondition, surface planed, install guides, seals, valves, short block assy. ::edit:: All std OEM components BTW, no forgies or anything. ::edit::

I know I probably missed some thing. <shrug>

Anyways, to answer your question... If you want them to install new pistons, they're probably going to pull the bottom cradle, which means they may as well check your crank and rods while they're out. Replace the bearings. Make sure to get the block/head checked for cracks and 'flattness'. That's the bare minimum I would do.

Best bet is to go down and talk to them. Make it clear you want to know prices upfront, and before any work is done.

hey jaypat, you wouldn't have an estimate on how much just the parts cost would you? I will be doing all my own labor and stuff in a shop bay of mine. . .so thats not an issue, also have one of the best mechanics in U.S. as step dad lol

won't have to worry about the machining. I'm trying to figure out an estimate of how much it will all be, cylinders, stuff like that. I hope to port & polish, bore it out HOPEFULLY .020 over and stroke it some. Then on with the turbo. Anyone have a top mounted intercooler, i want to keep mine as much of a sleeper as possible lol

there are lots of different things you could do. i have seen people take a black volvo intercooler, make brackets to move their radiator back enough to fit the intercooler between it and the radiator support.

also you could do a V-mount. nothing special to see there. i actually changed my mind on that just yesterday not to do it cause it will speend up my build by about three weeks. just going with a front mount now. i guess i am the opposite of you, i want my **** to be noticed, but then again my car will be very flashy i guess.

i wouldnt stroke the ka anymore, too expensive too.

you can get your front mount intercooler coated like in black if you want. Swain used to make a coating that coated the intercooler black and actually helped heat transfer (dont just paint it or anything, it will make it less efficient and it wont cool as well). If you have a top mount you will have to have a hood scoop to get air to the intercooler which will take away from the sleeper look anyway. A top mount wont cool as well because its harder to get lots of air to flow through it, and it will get hot from being in the engine bay.

since i could only find the cosmetic HG in a 90 bore size *which means i would need .04 overbore* what would i have then... a ka25? i cant remember the stock stroke now and forgot the formula from school that tells me how to figure it out...
