RE: Newly purchased 2010 Rogue
I checked the oil in my Rogue and the dipstick showed the level to be over an inch above the "high" mark.
I checked it twice. [I've been working on cars for a brazillian years].
Also at that time I discovered that the engine was covered with a film of oil.

I took it to the dealer.

They told me they found nothing wrong with the oil level, but they changed it anyway.
They also told me the oil on the engine was not motor oil but was silicone spray that they put on the engine to make it look better. :spitout:

I have trouble getting my head around this. I have never heard of coating an engine with dirt/dust collecting oil to make it look better; in fact I have spent a lot of time in my life cleaning engines to get rid of external oil.

What's your take on this?
I didn't notice any obvious problems with the over-filled engine, but, aside from potential foaming caused by the crank shaft whipping the oil to a froth, what other damage might occur?

...and have you heard of silicone spraying an engine for cosmetic purposes?

My 2 cents and I am no expert on the latter by any means.

If you're worried about overfill, I would change the oil filter to let some oil out.

As for the silicone making the engine look better, I am not sure of that opinion, but people have actually sprayed their engine compartment as a lubricant to protect from moisture, rust, to waterproof ignition systems, helps reduce squeaks, sticking and freezing etc. Just be careful around the intakes and sensors.

As for it harming the engine, I don't believe so when used correctly. Moreover, silicone spray has dielectic qualities. :mike

I guess I didn't make myself clear. :frown:
Sorry.

I'm not worried about silicone spray hurting the engine.
I am worried about the over-filled oil situation damaging the engine and am looking for some advice in that direction.

I do/did not intend to do anything to the engine, because this was an issue caused by the dealer and they needed to address it.
I want a record of this complaint on file with the dealer in case there are issues later on.
They claimed it was not over-filled but changed the oil anyway.

The "silicone spray" smelled like engine oil to me and I am looking for someone who has experienced Nissan dealers (or any other dealer) spraying silicone oil on an engine for cosmetic purposes only.
An engine should be clean & dry, IMHO.

Tnx

Helium I agree with you and feel your dealer is out to lunch on this one, the point is the job should be done properly regardless if you feel overfilling is dangerous or not. They should do this simple job right, fill it to the proper level.

t's very basic, the oil level should not exceed the "full" mark on the dipstick, period. If it is slightly higher, it won't do any damage but if it's significantly overfilled, i.e. 1 inch over the full line it can be damaging over time. It can increase pressures in your engine, putting extra stress on everything including the oil pump and it can also lead to oil foaming which is not good - foam does not lubricate properly so you can leave critical components without enough lubrication. The fact that your dealer would even argue with you is ridiculous, they should just do the job properly and apologize for any mistakes.

I've never heard of spraying lubricant on the outside of your engine, I think this would just cause dust and dirt to attract and stick to your engine, making it dirtier in the long run. Nothing to really worry about I guess, except that it might be an indicator of general incompetance of your service shop? I can't say for sure but things like this wouldn't instill a lot of confidence for me.

I Don't believe any of those mechanics in the bottle crap I believe they do worst to your Motor.
Overfilled oil could be just as bad as no oil BTW.
The counterweights could make the oil in to bubbly oil and the pick up would pick up bubbles = Air
