Try it both ways. Go out and drive it up to where overdrive should kick in, then try the button both in and out. If the revs drop, it's on, if you're wailing along at a bazillion rpm, then it's not on. I'd think that the dash wouldn't lie. If it wails both ways, your O/D switch may be broken.
