I don't know if this has been addressed, but does your Rogue have the overdrive on/off option? Our test drive model had an OD on/off button on the shifter, but the AWD we actually bought does not have the OD on/off button. Why would a CVT even have an OD on/off option? I asked the salesperson this and he gave me some empty answer like I was stupid. I suppose that if your are trying to engine brake downhill you would want to limit the upper shift range, but I would think the ECM or CVT control unit could take care of this. Also, you have the manual shift option anyway.

Any ideas?

The CVT does do this automatically when going down extreme downgrades, but O/D gives you manual control.

I don't have a premium package so no manual shifters. With the O/D, its the only way I can manually bump up and limit engine revs.

First off, paddle/manual shifted models (SL FWD or AWD with premium pack) do not get the overdrive lock button since you can accomplish the same with the paddle shifters.

The reason for the overdrive lock is like ahhbeebee suggested: It provides additional engine braking when going downhill. This is especially beneficial as you can activate the overdrive lock before going downhill and it will help slow down and control your speed sooner. In some cases, the CVT takes quite awhile to react and downshift and by that time you may have already gone much faster than you wanted. All of this gets magnified several times if you tow or carry larger passenger loads. I personally use it all the time when towing. It even helps for acceleration.
