Overdrive Problems

Hello im new to the site but was wondering if anyone could help me or has incountered the same type of problem. i just purchased a 1995 240sx yesterday and it was fine all day yesterday now today i go to drive it today and the check engine light flashes off and on same with the overdrive light. also the overdrive light didnt show up in drive but it did in all the other gears and at one point it wasnt working at all. the car has 109,000 miles on it. any help or information would be great thanks.

check the ecu for flashing light in passenger footwell. it has instructions on it. the error codes will tell you what is affected, which leads you to the real problem. get a factory service manual. don't waste your time on a chilton.

today i found out that the problem is in the shifter it self when its in drive theres a little bit of play to the left and to the right when you lightly push it to the left the O\D light goes off and when you push it to the right it comes back on also moving it either way is the same as pushing the O\D button to activate the overdrive so im guessing that its a loose connection or something with the wiring does anyone know how or where to start to get the console apart to check it out?

Funny you should mention the shifter... I took the console out of my sons S14 during stereo install and every since then the O/D switch doesn't work.

Guess I'll have to take it back apart and see if I missed something. The wiring was all connected but you never know...
