I read in my automatic transmission Versa's manual that the O/D Off button on the gear knob is used for going downhill only (i.e. engine breaking) and in emergency manuevers. I've driven other cars before with these feature and I've always thought that you could use this button fairly regularly such as overtaking on the freeway, or downshifting uphill. The manual also says that to downshift, just press the accelerator all the way down. I'd prefer using the O/D Off button and save some gas. What's your take on this?

I don't know how you drive, but usually the O/D off will not save you gas. It will give you more power because will be running a higher RPM. The O/D is meant to drive the wheels as fast as a lower gear and use less engine power to do so.

If you shift in and out of O/D a lot by constantly trying to pass and keep the RPMs higher, I'd personally recommend running out of O/D. Usually the constant shifting in and out is what starts to wear on the transmisson.

I though the O/D Off is for going up steep hills or towing...
