hey,

my 1992 (auto) over heats. theres like, what i think is rust in the radiator. and my transmission does NOT switch from 2nd to third. soo i only have two gears. first and second.

what would i have to do to make it stop over heating? and is it cause of the trany?

why doesnt my transmission switch?

what could cause these problems?

thanks you guys. any help would be very appreciated.

Well, the inital cause of your problems is most likely a stoped up radiator. Thats pretty obvious from the statement about your 'rust' colored coolant. You need a new radiator first of all. This MIGHT fix your transmission issues, if you havnt roached your toruqe converter already due to your over heating issue. You should also replace your water pump while your at it. Im sure you cooling system is in bad shape.

Pick up a Mishimoto radiator for an auto on ebay for like 200 and see if that doesnt fix your problems. Make sure you get one for the Automatic, they have a built in transmission cooler on the bottom. Before you do though, flush your coolant system out 2-3 times. You dont want all that crap to re-clog your new radiator.

Over heating can be caused by any of the following reasons:- air in the coolant system- plugged up radiator- defective thermostat- bad water pump- collapsing radiator hoses- blown head gasket

The shifting problem can be caused by the following:- shifter linkage- inhibitor switch- shift solenoid valve B

Go up to your local parts store and buy a bottle of radiator flush.

First, you want to drain all your coolant out of your system. Since your coolant system is already trashed, you should first flush it out with just water to get the big stuff out. Fill it back up with water, and let it run for 10-20 min until it gets hot. Then drain it again. After this time, use the bottle of radiator flush, and follow the directions on the back of the bottle. After you do that, flush it with water at least one more time.

As a side note, bleeding all the air out of your system can be a pain in the ***. Make sure you jack the front of your car wayy up, so the radiator cap is the highest point on the engine. Then fill your radiator with the bleeder screw open until a steady stream of water/coolant shoots out of that hole. Then, start your car and leave your car running for 5 min, or until the thermostat opens with the radiator cap off. Just keep an eye on your water temp gage to make sure you got the air out of the system.
