Outside temperature readout problem

Today I was driving and noticed the temperature on my 02 qx4 changing rapidly and then wentblank but the compass was working. Now I see the temperature is constantly wrong but the compass is working fine. What is wrong?

Edit: I also noticed that the light on the compass/temp is dimmed even when the headlights are off. And also the light around the temperature adjusting knob and the lights around the shifter is lit also.

so a little more info, this morning i went to start the car and everything looked fine, but when i turned on my headlights i noticed the temperature readout slowly decreasing from the correct temperature. At this point also the console lighting and the shifter lighting came on as well as the temperature readout dimmed as well. Once I turned the headlights off, the lights didnt change.I turned off the vehicle and pulled the key out and as soon i turned it to the first position all the console lighting came on as well.Any ideas? I haven't done anything recently other than add HID fogs about a month ago, but this problem only started about two days ago.

hey all,
so this happened again today. I think there is some kind of short somewhere...basically what I need to know is where is the connection that when you turn your lights on in the night time, the inside lights turn on, on the dash and the shifter lights. Because today i parked in the garage, turned off the lights and the inside lights were on until i removed the key and the dome light turns on.

I hope someone could help me with this problem..thx!
