Someone give me the lowdown on out of state car buying. I am looking at several cars all out of state. Lets say I want to put a deposit on it, so that they dont sell it up from under me, how do I assure that my money is not going to just disapear? Another thing I was wondering about is, Im planning on driving the car back home through multiple states, so Im going to need to get licences plates and register it in the state I buy it in, that means I have to pay tax and title too, So do I have to pay tax and title again in my home state? do I have to re-register and pay fees for that?

thanks a lot for all your advice in advance

P.S. any other tips to keep from getting scammed and stuff would be greatly apprecaited.

Well for the license plate thing, in Virgininia you can get something that is called a drive away tag for like 10 dollars, that acts as a temporary (3 day) license plate. You shouldn't have to pay tax and title 2 times, at least I didnt when i bought my car. Call up the DMV and see if your state has anything like that.

You might want to check with your local DMV office about what's required. I'm thinking the same as catty that you might need a temporary transit tag issued by the state you purchased it to legally drive it home. I'm not sure. There are folks that'll just slap on an old tag, and carry the bill of sale in case they get stopped. That's ok, unless you get stopped by an ornery officer. It's a risk. Not huge, but still a risk. Depending on the cop, the worst maybe getting a ticket for operating an unregistered vehicle and perhaps forcing you get the car towed home. Some may just let you go. it's a crap shoot. The gentleman who bought my 240 drove across several states to get it home and did it by tossing on an old plate. He got home fine. In any case, you'll want to contact your insurance broker to make sure this car is added to your policy before you drive it. Your agent can easily send an id card if you provide him the make/model/color/vin, before you make the trip. Good luck

Bubba's right. I have only recently been on the selling end of a Roadster that was driven to Arkansas. I'm still unsure of the particulars of what she'll need to do Monday morning but the car originated in Fort Worth where it was inspected, then we inspected it and it will have to be inspected again in Arkansas as well as registered. With a bill of sale you can probably get 5 or 30 day temp tags from that state till you get it situated at home.

Oh my, don't call me that! You'll bust my rep Bubba! :D

Regardless, this is good advice. As far as sending money to the seller, well, you may have to trust yourself to be a good judge of character. If the seller seems sketchy, he probably is. My general rule is that of gamb|ing; don't send more money than you can afford to lose. ;)

heh I bought my S13 in northern MA, almost Vermont, and drove it home - with no plates whatsoever - to middle/southern Connecticut. hahah I just had my friend drive behind me real close to minimize the risk. It was probably a stupid thing to do, but I saved myself the PITA of going allllll the way home, buying a temp tag, and then driving all the way back to get the car. Plus it was kinda an on the spot buy and I didnt want the guy re-thinking about the price. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

darn, would you guyz drive it 600+ miles with some other plates. i want to buy a995-1996 240sx (prefferably black) and i just located one in KY (i live in NY). it is a stick shift car with 122k miles, it goes for 2000$. the only thing about it is that it's missing front bimper. interior is cloth. is that a good deal and should i fly in and drive it on some other plates? And how's insurance on these cars, i heard different things about it...

$2000 would be for a 95 240sx in good condition. missing a front bumper is "below" good. Make them take a hit for the bumper.

2k is good but not good enough to fly for if you ask me. yer gonna end up spending about 750-1000 just to get it back (plain ticket, gas, food, ect)

and for that price, you can get the car shipped to you. It will cost about 650$ to ship a running car from KY to NY. go to google and do a search on auto transporter, look specifically for aries, thats who I went with, and I was very pleased.
