so other than the smell, how do you tell if your cat is bad? my car smells funny, sometimes like rotton eggs, but more often it just smell not right, like really strong gas fumes or something, (not really sure how to explain it) i used the search, but non of the answers really seemd to help me figure out what was wrong.

my car is a stock 1992 240sx 5spd

it doesn't seem to be having any problems in the performace part and it idles just fine.

*edit*

the other smell kind of reminds me of bleach if that helps.

ahh. my auto teacher has said that some old cars smell like rotten eggs, it may just be because of the age. change it if it makes you feel better, or you could just replace it with a test pipe since you dont have emmisions.

The rotten egg smell would be cat the other odor may be the reason for the cat going bad. to rich or to lean of mixture will take a cat out pretty quickly.

Since your in oklahoma maybe you ran over a possom and it is cooking on your exhaust. Get the engine good and hot ran it at about 2000 rpm for 10 mins stirring occasionally till it becomes crisp on the outside after ten mins you should ba able to peirce it with a fork. Its usually done when you can pull the fork out with out the juices sticking to the fork. Then serve it with a nice vinager sauce.

Sorry I couldnt resist!! It was the whole oklahoma thing.

Seriously though you may have a rich fuel condition going on. Do some checks on the Maf and if possible a voltage check on your O2 see if its locked above or below .5v. It should fluctuate above and below it and not be stuck at one side or the other.

On the maf put your black lead of your multimeter to the neg batt cable and use your red lead to check voltage at the 3 wires on your airflow meter you prope the back side of the connector while its plugged in a pin or paper clip works well. one wire should be battery voltage ,one wire should be 0v and one wire will be between 1.3 and 1.5 volts at idle. On the 0 volts wire it should be no more then .02v.

Can't say that I've ever had a possum. Hmmm.....might have to run over one so I can try it out. So you say 2000 rpm for 10 minutes, but if it's especially warm out, will that cooking time be reduced? Also if I kick it up a notch and run it at 2500, will that be reduced to 7 minute??

thanks for the info...

and about the possum, you actually see more armadillos around here dead on the side of the road (and in fact, i have only seen a live armadillo once when i was a kid) and besides, they taste better, just hit it, pop open the hood, lay it on your header, and grill away. tastes like chicken

I don't think I've ever seen an Armadillo, and this is why I love NICO so much.
