Well, I already completed a four year honours degree at a Canadian University. I attend an American college now though, which is sucking the money out of me. Boy is it expensive to attend an American school. It's for a Masters in Childhood Education.Basically I want to be a teacher. But because I'm attending an American school, we have to write a thesis this summer. Plus we have to pay for double certification (NY and ONT). Plus we have to write three NY state exams. I've already done 2, next one is booked for June. And the fees just keep adding up. I cannot wait to be done. I finish at the end of August. It's a 1 year program. Almost done

Yes college is expensive. I've still got through 2012 to be paying on my loans for my 4 year degree (ok so it was longer), and I grad'd in '01.

Really, WOW! That is a long time to pay it off. But as far as I know American college/universities cost ALOT more than an Ontario university/school.

I know the costs have gone up here, every year they do. When I went it was just under $5000 CDN a year. Total was about $20000 for a 4 year degree. That cost though is just for tuition. I didn't live in residence, that would have cost double the price.

But now I'm attending a college in Buffalo, and its over $20000 US for just one year. That is such a big difference from here. But I guess that's part of being a student ... accumulating some debt along the way! haha!

The loans are just a 10 year pay back. Its only $172 a month.

My school was actually very cheap, especially back then. After moving off campus tuition was about $2000 a year, but the loans I recieved coved my bills/rent. Was working 2-4 jobs the whole time, but all were part time and didn't pay well.

Think I ended up with about $16000 in loans. Only borrowed for 3.5 years and including summer schools. Was there for 5.5 years with 4 summer schools included (CIS degree, minor Sociology). I'm 6 classes away from degrees in Sociology and Accounting, but probably won't go back unless its for MBA.

I work for a University now and they would pay for any undergrad work, but not for Grad.

Never went to college. Didn't really feel the need to. Enlisted in the PaANG, worked at USAirways for a year, then got deployed, came back and did some more ANG stuff and now I work at Three Mile Island as Security.

Make good money at three mile island? A co-worker of mine worked there a few weeks and made prevailing wages and IIRC it was a nice hourly wage. I would love to get on at a nuke plant.

why the US, ILMV? specialized degree? why not teacher's college here in Ontario? will the Masters from a US U get you further ahead [and will the Ontario Teachers Federation now give you a hard time?]

fwiw, I worked on my BEd at the UofS in Saskatoon.

I choose to go to Buffalo because they have colleges there that specialize in certification for Ontario students. Everyone in my class and all the other classes at my campus during the day are all Canadians. It is very difficult to get into an Ontario teacher's college. They do not have a lot of space, whereas the US gladly welcome us. To them it's all about the money. As long as we have the money to pay, they willingly accept us. And no it doesn't make it harder to get our Ontario certification. The school sets up everything for us. The only downside is that we have to pay for double certification. NY and ONT. But that means I could teach in the state of NY if I really wanted to. Also, it is considered a masters there but not really a masters here. The US program is run a bit differently than an ONT program. We only have class two days a week, rather than everyday, and we go for an entire year. However, our second semester (which just finished) was composed of our student teaching. For 14 weeks we were all assigned two dif't schools that we student taught at. Even though we attend a US school we were allowed to pick our placements in Ontario. So I did a placement for Hamilton Catholic and Halton Catholic. The US way is a lot more money, but I like it. I finish at the end of August 2009 so I'm looking forward to the end of school

Oh cool... my uncle was a VP there until about a year or 2 ago. One of my cousins goes there and she seems to like it. Do you drive back and forth every day?

Yeah, I have to attend college. I've gone for almost 3 years; it's an accelerated technical college like ITT Tech or Fullsail. I'm growing tire of physical labor jobs and retail positions. With my Bachelor's in Game Art & Design, I could work for different types of companies. Examples are Nintendo, EA, ID, Capcom for the gaming industry. I can also get into a graphics design business that makes posters, advertising or logos and such. During my freetime, I tend to work with Adobe Photoshop a lot, Illustrator, Premier, and Dreamweaver. I use 3D Studio Max 2009 for the 3D modeling, animation, texture mapping etc. There are other programs like Z-Brush and Lightwave which I'd love to learn how to use but don't have much spare time.

Wow... Those prices...

I know that colleges/universities are great in the US, but I think I should be grateful that here in Panama you can get a degree for $10000 (4 years)... And that is the price when you choose a private university...

When you choose a public university, the total (for an engineering career) might be around $1000, yes only 3 zeros (total of 5 years)... And I'm actually including books costs... The funny thing is that our public university is the best of all, is easy to get in, but you will struggle all the way until the end, studying day and night, not being able to work at all...

Hey, classes are only 2 days a week. I share the ride with a couple other girls and will do that again once our next semester starts in June. We will alternate driving since we all live close to each other here at home. We drive up on the Monday (early morning) and stay over until Tuesday after class. We are usually home by Tuesday evening. So we just stay there the one night. We split the cost of a hotel and we alternate driving so we don't each have to drive our own cars every week. At least I won't be putting too much mileage on the V this summer.

So, are you going to take a pic of yourself with the 'other girls' in front of the V posing? I need a teaser...

residency is a paying job true... but you pay your hospital to be an intern. trauma residency is 6 years. typical salary for those 6 years is 70k.

I would feel bad for you, except being out of college for almost 8 years and I still don't make 2/3rds of that.

I work for a hospital/school of med, I know salaries. I also deal with a lot of doctors who just see themselves as being better than others. Makes me not like the profession as much.

I'm out of college 33 years, still don't make that and am paying off about $60k of my two kids' college loans. (One bought a Versa right out of college. She probably wouldn't have been able to get it if I had made pay her own way in school!)

Getting a new car right out of college is about the worst idea ever. I bought an '02 Pathfinder a month after getting a job, lost a lot of money that would have went to a house, instead of renting for 6+ years.

I dont understand, 3 years in the union I'm in at the shop I'm at and your at 55-60k a year, and you dont have 80k in college debt. Why would anyone go to school and end up with that much debt if they did'nt plan to make 80-100k a year?

Yeah it's a sad reality. Layoff's happen alot in unions, especially during slow times. Currently I'm temp. laid off until things pick up a bit, me and a few other co-workers. It's the first layoff the company I work for has had in years so thats just a slight indicator to how things are right now.
