MOD Edit: I didn't want to clutter the other guys thread with nostalia posts so I've created a new thread...however when moving the below post it for some reason (based on timestamp I guess) put it above my original post for this thread. Ed's response is related to the 2nd post in this thread.

Small world. That gold Maxima was my wallpaper for a while before I got my 97 SE. Not sure where I got the picture from, but it was motivation to push 2 jobs that summer. Best 1,100 bucks I ever spent. Put some work from a cheap A-B car till it looked like this. The Maxima was definitely a gateway drug to this Infiniti problem I have. Granted, if I had the means, I probably would have jumped to the the biggest baddest car I could afford but 190 hp was exhilarating enough for a broke college kid... for a while.

So, another thread got me and others reminiscing about our old hoopties, cars and the beginning of our 'modding' days.

Here were my cars:

My first car wasn't a $10k+ M. It was a Geo I was handed down from my mom and 2 siblings after her that I sold for $200 once I was done with it (I'm the baby of the family). Couldn't put more than $5 of gas in because it would spill out the tank and stunk like gas inside. Had no radio. Thing was a true POS but it drove. lol. Here are my cars, in order from top left to bottom right although first two are just Google images (Subaru was also my moms old car and my first Maxima my parents bought from my brother for me - the Gold Maxima was the first car I actually paid for myself and see how much love went into it?):

Hahah, that's crazy Ed. Never thought my car made it to someones wallpaper. Thank you! Hah. It seems like a lot of us M guys stepped up from the Maxima (particularly the 4th and 5th gen).

I put a ton of work into that car and it too was my gateway drug to modding cars (and later/now, motorcycles). This was the car I truly learned to work on cars with...and the one where I learned how to take stuff apart, install, etc. It was a 99 SE and I actually purchased it from a widower who's wife died from cancer...she only put 26kmi on it and I bought it in like 2007...which is CRAZY low mileage. Had that car to about 102kmi.

Here's what I had done to it:
  • Full stainless steel exhaust
  • Performance air filter
  • Tokico Struts and H&R Springs
  • 5Zigen FN01R-C 18" wheels
  • Independently rewired fog lights
  • Custom handmade projector retrofit running Acura TL Bi-xenon projects with a replica ZKW clear lense
  • Custom handmade LED tail lights
  • LED interior (including all controls, speedometer, etc.)
  • Converted to heated leather interior by hand
  • Pioneer AVIC Z2 navigation converted/hacked to Z3...then I switched to a Kenwood DNX8120 navigation (thing was beautiful)
  • Full system with 10" JL Audio sub and Alpine amp
Car ended up making one of the old Maxima.org and NYCMaximas.org calendars. Miss that car but at around 100kmi it started to throw CEL's like crazy so I got rid of it...

I had help with the headlights and tails. I did do the screen though, but that was quite easy too. Unlike the M and it's very involved AV/Climate system, the Maxima didn't have that. It was just a basic double din stereo I took out and replaced and re-wired some stuff for the GPS, etc. It was more about the amount of money I spent on that car lol...

I put like $5-6k into that car in goodies.

Love maximas. I have owned two 3rd gens previously and almost bought a 7th gen but fell in love with my m35. I will never purchase a maxima as long as they will continue to be FWD.

The last nice Maxima was the 2003. The 6th gen were decent looking and a had the same interior as the G...but CVT is no bueno.

Ilya, very cool modding to that Maxima! Nice work!

Sorry if this is a little long... I love taking cars!

I've owned a lot of cars over the years and don't have pictures of them all. I'll list some of the cooler cars I had and share a few pictures.

My first car was a 77 Camaro type LT.
I also owned a 81 GMC Jimmy with a worked 350 with headers, dual exhaust, and 33" tires.
78 Trans Am 400 auto that I painted silver.
86 Monte Carlo SS that I stripped down to metal and painted Ferrari black.
Image

My first new car was a 96 Trans AM loaded with 6 speed, Hotchkis suspension, tuned, CAI, SLP headers, and Borla exhaust.
Image

86 Honda Civic Si hatchback that I drove daily and used the Trans Am nights and weekends.

88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe
Image

04 Acura TL (new) loaded with Comptech USA short throw shifter, carbon interior kit, and Enkei wheels.

Also, here's a couple of current ones I own that are modded. I spent over 7 years building this one, and still have more to do. lol

80 Corvette Resto-Mod 500 hp 385 stroker engine, T56 6 speed, and 3.70 rear.

2015 Explorer Sport loaded with Livernois Motorsports 93 Performance tune, 160 thermostat, and 3 bar map sensor.

That resto-mod is sweet. I love watching Gas Monkey Garage and shows like that. I also like those new explorers, I think they look great.
