I feel like a dope for asking this...but in the pic, which direction is the front/ rear of the head If I had to guess, I would say the left side is the front?

Going of the picture bolt numbers 8 and 9 are on the front of the head.

See how the cam has big bearing journals/caps on one end of the head, and small bearing journals/caps on the other end? Remember that the front of the cams has the bigger looking caps that hold the cam in place ?

NUT-CSE got it right. 8/9 is the front.
