Smokey Yunick designed an engine he called the "Abdiatic Process Engine" there was a write up on it in Popular Science about 15 years ago. He heated up the F/A mix with an "interheater" with exhaust. Then ran a supercharger with a pressure actuated pop off valve converting the super to turbo at a preset pressure/boost. Heating the F/A mix made it run on fumes, apparently lots of power and good mileage too. The supercharger got it off the line then the turbo kicked in at higher RPM's to save mechanical losses. I think the car was a '80's Citation w/ a 2.5L and a 4 or 5 speed. It could smoke the tires from a stop in 3rd.
Smokey said he got the idea when a farmer got killed torching the top off a drum that had been sitting for a few years with the bung off, but still had gas fumes in it somehow.
