okay i have been researching which subs to get for my 98 kouki. i have read reviews and its pretty much preferences. i would like to get some help or advice on what i should get. i will only need a single 12" sub, mostly likely sealed box around 2 cubic feet. and i will be running 1200 rms. i have looked at alpine type-r, kicker l7, kicker comp vx, other generic competition subs. what do you guys think. is there some other subs that are around that price range and will be better? i dont know if its true but ive heard that if its labeled competition it will kick ***? i mean any sub thats labeled competition. thanks in advance.

Why do you want a sub?

In my opinion; Of those listed I would def get the alpine Type-R. You can't go wrong there. They're fantastic subs and can be had on e-bay for a very reasonable price. They may not hit as loud or hard as some but they'll more than make up for it in sound quality.

And as far as your question Looneybomber...I'll assume you were kidding.

I've installed many different systems in all types of cars, and I LOVE the way JL audio sounds. just my opinion.

Not kidding at all. Some want a sub just for a little bottom end fill, others want to be able to hear their music 100ft from the car where-as others want to install 30, 12" subs and see if they can hit 180db.

What sub/box/amp you choose will depend on your application right? So it was a very valid question.

While they sound good, their performance can be matched for ~1/4 the price.

I'd recommend a TC Sound TC-9 12" in a 2ft^3 box tuned to 30hz.

Anything by TC-Sounds is top notch for the money. The biggest thing you need to do is decide how much room you have for an enclosure and sub(s). Next you need to decide how much power you're wanting to supply them with in order to meet your SPL demands.

Since you already made up you mind on how much power you're wanting, now you just need to figure out what sub and how many you'll need to handle that power.

If you're wanting an 18" (Elemental Designs 19Ov.2) sub, let me know. I'm thinking about getting rid of it for 2, 15" TC-1000's...Home theater use.

*edit* Sonosubs are not going to work. Too big with a little kid running around. Now I am entertaining the idea of a single 15" TC-3000. At 400.00 for the driver, it's kind'a expensive.

If you're looking for a 10" go with the TC-10

It has a crazy amount of excursion. It'll move about as much as as most 12s.

It's ~$175.

Just be prepaired for a really deep sub.

I perfer MTX. They can get exspensive, but they are def. worth the price. I had an 8500 12" w/ 400 watts running to it and it sounded clearer and hit harder than my buddys 2 15's w/ 2000 watts running to it.
