im also a newbie to this forum and i do own a rogue and absolutely love it. i dont mind the CVT transmission because its better on gas, but sometimes i feel like the rogue would be a much better drive if it was manual transmission. I gotta say its a very smooth ride. I noticed tonight while i was driving that whenever you're on a hill with the rogue the car basically slows down to about 20 mph, and the only way to get the car to move is by putting your foot all the way down on the pedal. Does this happen to anyone or is it just me? Other then that i love my rogue other then how the electronic gas meter is not accurate!

There is a technical service bulletin (TSB) for the gas level indicator problem. I don't remember which years are effected but my 2011 did. They replaced the fuel sender unit (the electronic component in the gas tank) and it is now showing the fuel level accurately. If your car is AWD, there are two fuel sender units, since the gas tank has two compartments due to the rear differential.

And yes...that is a typical CVT behaviour. I am not sure about the hills, becasue Ottawa, Ontario is a flat city :rotfl . I am not complaining during normal stop and go city traffic and on highway, but whenever I enter highway, on the acceleration lane, I step on the pedal down to the floor, the car screams as if I am not chanigng the gear of a manual transmission car...and then the car accelerates. That is the only time I hate CVT.

My opinion of the CVT is similar, I don't love it but don't mind it either because it is working to save me fuel. As long as it provides long term reliability then I'll be happy with it!

When going downhill, the CVT will select a low gear to slow your acceleration, you will notice your rpms rise dramatically. This is by design, there is no stress on your vehicle, the engine will be using zero fuel at this point with injectors completely shut off as the downhill momentum will push the engine through its revs. This is designed to help you avoid the use of your brakes, and yes if you push down on the throttle to let the computer know that you want to accelerate, there will be a momentary rise in rpms prior to the CVT increasing the gear ratio in response to your imput. Your rpms should quickly drop after you provide throttle input.

I too have complained of the lack of a manual transmission option, which is offered in Europe as well as a diesel engine option. Because of this, my wife and I purchased a 2011 Kia Sorento with 6-spd manual trans because it was one of the few mid-size crossovers that offered a manual.
