Ok guys here is my situation....I already have a heavily modded (yet sadly undynoed) z32 for my big power grunt...but my s14 is my daily driver and the basically stock ka24de in there is just plain old boring to me anymore (but not a bad motor at all really, nice mid range power and overall none too shabby for a 4 banger) i have a budget of 5 grand but id like to spend less if possible....basically what motor should i look for in terms of a hotter daily driver....I did a n/a--->TT conversion on the z32 myself so i concider myself a decent monkeywrench dispite my age...My first idea was an sr20 just from the ease of the swap, but sourcing parts might a little mroe then i would bargain for...then i was thinking a ka-t, strip down the block and throw in some forged internals bigger injectors, but then fuel; pumps and piggy backs and all kinds of fun sets in...the rb series fits but is a ****load of work and even harder on parts...could i maybe cram in a vg30(d)et?

well if you are familiar with force induction then you should do that...there are several turbo kits available that shouldn’t be to hard to install…come on over to the KA24DET forum we have plenty of good info...if you search about various subjects you will find every questione possible...answered at least 3 times…

For 5K you could play with lots of engine choices.

I'd suggest a KA-T :)

However you could also go with a CA or SR for that kind of cash. Really up to you and what sort of condition your KA is in.

if you dont have the time or ability to fab up your own KAT kit greddy came out with their kit a few months ago and just recently came out with the intercooler and piping for the kit. kit+intercooler should run you about $3500 so you would have enough left over for the exhaust, clutch & flywheel, along with guages. or if you read the KAT forums for awhile, you could get the info to make you own kit for less $

Yeah, you can patch together a turbo kit yourself for less, but to do it properly your going to spend some good money.

not to mention it will take more time when making your own kit. if you need this for a daily driver you might need to drive the z32 while you get all the piping done along with working all the bugs out.

Piping can be done in a day if your industrious enough and have welding ability.

Don't see how it would really cause alot of downtime if you planned things out.

i'd have to get a premade kit, I dont quite have much int he way of welding equipment, but i would ahve to tear the ka down to the block as shes at 140k....well maintained but thats still a ****load of miles to throwing boost onto....and if i would do that i might as well get forged internals...then it starts getting expensive...but it would be a 0 mile motor pretty much...decisions decisions

is there much i can do to make the ka's will to rev a little closer to a ca's? I know most of it is the long stroke, but would dif. speced rods help or anything?

No, reluctantly this is the one thing that requires alot of effort and money to do. It seems everything on the KA is designed for midrange torque production which means it suffers on the top end.

The key to making the KA rev is in the internals... the pistons have to be really light else your going to destroy bearings due to the long stroke the KA has. The crank itself isn't suited for high rpm action either... the balancing from the factory is poor.

arg, i know i can stuff an sr in there in a weekend and the z was my daily driver from the day i got my liscense untill a september when i bought my s14, so i guess it can make due for that time....would it be cheaper for me to go a junkyard and grab a sr20 block out of a g20 or old school se-r or something, build the internals and see what i can do about an ecu and maybe use a ka transmission or something....awww **** it....this wont be cheap....maybe i should just deal with my ka....how much gain would i see from an intake and header setup (i already have a nice exhuast) and has anyone ever gone about supercharging a ka? a small roots type might do wonders, i dont like 4~6 pounds of boost would kill me, id still be able to run headers....hmmmmm i might even be able to grab the s/c of a junked t-bird supercoupe......hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Supercoupe = Turbocharged

I'd stick to turbocharging the KA if your looking for quick bang for the buck.

the KA really doesnt do much with bolt ons. if you go witha intake, header, and the exhaust you have you'll free up some horses in the higher rpms the the KA needs it but you really wont see to big of a change. if you want power out of the KA then you are going forced induction

The KA nets about 150rwhp with intake/header/exhaust.
