I might be buying an 89 240sx for $650 (might be able to get him down to $500). everything is stock and has 133k miles, but needs new timing belt and a new catalytic converter. i only have about $1000 so i want to make sure whatever i buy i can fix within that price range. ive read that installation of these parts can be a couple hundred all together.

however, i found a ka24de for sale for $500 with 90k miles on it and everything working. im just wondering if i should just replace the two parts, or buy the used ka24de. im new to cars and parts and stuff, so im probably overlooking some major problems with the second option if i choose it (swapping it for instance, or the price of swapping it).

but any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys

There's been a run on "should I buy this" threads lately, you'll find more of them in the "main 240" area. You should be able to get an idea from the other threads, please don't repost yours.

Long story short, if you're "new to cars", don't buy a project unless you have another mode of transportation.
