The $1000 setups are worth it. basically megans are "ok" but stance and higher end tien, and BC racing and KW and all the bigger name brands are 100x more durable.
Ive been drifting for 4 years now, and Ive had strut/spring combos, used JDM imported coils, and those godspeed/emotor usa coils.
I'm not a fan of strut/spring combos. They aren't nearly stiff enough. They suck to autox and drift with, but they do ride ok and can be cheap.
The imported coils i bought were cusco type zeros (great brand). They were fantastic for the $180 I paid for them. Rode OK even though they were 2x to 3x stiffer then the eibach springs and kyb struts i had before. I ended up selling them.
I got similar coils to the ones on ebay. They were great for the $100 I paid for them. Softer then my cusco's so they rode GREAT, but the car leaned more in corners. Decent to drift with. BUT after 12-15K miles they were totally and utterly shot. the coilovers developed play in them and were dangerous to drive with.
I had $180 in the cuscos that were a little worn when I got them with high mileage, exact wasn't known. I put 25K+ on them then got rid of them. I bought the godspeeds for $100 and they lasted 9 months and 15K miles and they were junk. My recomendation is buy some used coilovers from JIC,Stance,Megan (last on my list), Cusco, Tien. Theres a few more brands i'd trust but godspeed, emotor, D2, ksport, those are trash.
