I had removed all the sensors and controls that operate the secondary butterflies, and my car seemed to run fine. I recently reconnected the secondaries directly to a vacuum line. I don't notice much difference, but when i decelerate, it is smoother.

Any opinions one way or the other

O.K., I must have stumped everyone. I drove it to Bend 200 miles away, and this is what I found with the secondaries connected direct to vac:

Power seemed the same, but with a little more off the line power. It seemed a little harder to press the gas at high RPM to get the same speed though. Sounds wierd but there was less resistance without the secondaries connected. More air flowing?I did get 26 MPG doing 75 through mountain passes and high elevation climbing. My last tank before I connected the secondaries I might have got 21 MPG and it was all on the interstate (a bit faster too). ANY THOUGHTS OR SIMILAR EXPERIENCES, WHAT DO MOST 240'S RUN??

Those aren't "secondaries", first off. It is called the swirl control valve and is designed to help lower idle emissions. They close at idle and ONLY at idle. If you hook vacuum directly to them, you are basically shutting them closed while driving = not good. They probably will give you better MPG because you are flowing way less air, which means way less fuel.

Either hook them up properly, or disconnect them completely. Either way, it's usually not recommended to monkey around with stuff that you have no idea about.

I wasn't just messing with stuff, I read a really detailed post somewhere that talked about connecting them directly to vacuum, the advantages and disadvantages. The only way to learn about stuff is to ask others who have more experience than I do, it's scarry but i built my engine and did a 5-speed swap all from the Nico club info and input.

Also, the second you hit the gas your vacuum goes down and Swirl Control (secondaries) open up.The original thread described it at idle like putting your finger over the end of a garden hose, restricting the flow thus giving you better response from idle. I would like to know what others are running....and why

We removed it from our race car because it was one less vacum lline to leak and we go from a moveing start. We removed all emissions and other than a little (5% worse) roughness in the idle it works fine.

Well then, my apologies. It sounded like you were just moving vacuum lines around to see what happens. I have never heard of this "mod".There are plenty of discussions on disabling it, but that's all I have seen.

Personally I completely removed the system (actuators and the butterflies). I also spent a good amount of time and money porting my head and manifolds to reduce restrictions. So open or not, those butterflies and the shaft are just things in the way of my intake charge.
