Max, as much as it pains me to say, I usually agree with you.

But that I think is the most inaccurate and unsubstantiated blanket statement I've ever read.

Perhaps, but as a generalization to the under 50 generations, I think it is unfortuantely true. Read the original post. Abuse is considered normal behavior these days and accepted by many. It is a diposeable society with no mind to where the landfills are or what the consequences of this behavior imply either short or long term. Just keep shoveling it onto someone else's property.

As to us being a more disposable society - no doubt. However, look at "green" and efficiency compared to 1950, 60, 70, or even 80 across all industries.

I think you're remarking less on society and more on younger blood with a steering wheel. Hell, you're not entirely wrong...

Sorry for OT

Sounds like a Ph.D. sociologist-or a bitter middle aged man whose 1950's utopia didn't last. "Kids these days..."

This thread derailed so fast Amtrak got whiplash.

Aside from that, I want to say thanks to those who helped me out earlier. Went and looked at a 98 Q45 last night. Couldn't get it financed as its over 10 years old but I'm set on a Q being my next car. The are some of the nicest cars I've ever been in.

Save up until you can afford it and a $2K - $3K cash kitty to keep it in shape. No reason to finance a ~$10K or less car.

That's the problem. I know thats the right course of action and if it was in the realm of possibilty I would do it, the problem is. I started a nice new job and 2 weeks in my car goes down. Now I have to drive 40 miles to another store to train there with no car.

I refuse to get another cheap car too. I've done it twice now just getting something to get me by and then I've dumped more than I payed for them just keeping them running.

Well, if your job is secure and the car is required, and 40 miles is a commute one doesn't want to endure in misery, so go for it if you have a substantial downpayment and still have a reserve.

Avoiding financing a depreciating asset will help you on the long run. But don't buy something you cannot afford to operate and repair comfortably financially.

KA, do your self a God Blessing Favor and stay away from Financing a used car by all means. Do not do it. 6 Months from now you will see why and be extremely happy you didn't finance a used car.

If you do finance; which you shouldn't, make sure you have a Warranty thats real good, even if the warranty is embedded in the principle. Do a three year around that if its an option. But you just started this job. See if you can by something out right.

I was in your same situation. No matter what I spend on repairs I don't have a monthly payment any more and it feels good. I spent the last 4 + years financing and it sucked. Circumstance can really hurt you, especially since your just reestablishing your finances. I know its tempting to finance and its an easy exit, but it may be a door into more problems that have nothing to do with a car.

There are some nice variations of the 90-96 Q's that can be had for a little under or over $2,000. Then at least $3,000 spread out over time. And its a wrap, you would own a sweet ride for the next 3 years or so and then think about financing.

We see so many new customers with their shiney new used 90-2000 Q who faint when they find out their beauty needs $3,000-$9,000 in repairs.

But the paint is so pretty and it has a new battery and brand new cheap tires.................... and an oil change if they are lucky. Nothing else was done except a $200 detail wax and buff and the selling price increased by $2,700 from the auction.

Your right about that, but I think your statement goes for any used luxury car, or any ride for that matter. I have always been into the Q45 ever since the 90's. I did a crap load of research years ago on the Q45. When I saw my Q45 the paint wasn't shiny it was dull dirty with tar, super dust and road grime. It had part of the Q45T missing. I know the shocks where bad, and could clearly see the belts where shot. I had to weigh the cost of a new car, fixing my car or the in between which was the Q45. I went with the middle ground. I had allot of work done before I even took her on the road. I detailed her myself with a 2 stage detailing which took two weeks.

There is for sure more then $3,000 of work I need to put into her. But I will say this, by the time that money is spend, GOD willing, it will be an wiser investment then my other option, which included financing another car.

Thanks again for the input guys. I got some good news today from work. My mother is letting me borrow her car for the week while she is on vacation and when my boss heard of my recent plight he said he'd be willing to work with me on being at a different store. Said I might even be able to cut down my time there and only be there till the end of the week if I can learn everything in that time.

Obviously this is a god thing because I hate the idea of financing anything. It was just going to be a sad necessity and I figured if I was going to do it I might as well get what I was wanting and be happy with what I financed. Now though I should be good. I can put off getting another vehicle as long as possible and get a nice downpayment/ payment to help out in the future.
