I am probably going to be buying a 240 hatch very soon. It doesn't run however. But I have really been wanting to put a rb25det in it. After realizing the size my wallet needs to be to actually do that, and the problems I may encounter in the process I am really starting to want to chuck that idea nd go back to my initial idea of putting a sr20det in there. I know the s15 is the motor to get but i've seen it up to 3000 dollars...thats too much I would rather buy the rb motor and parts if I have to drop that much into an engine.

I would really like some input from those of you with sr20det motors that have experience driving other fast like cars. I previously owned a 95 gsx/tsi awd with fidanza flywheel 2600lb act clutch, exhaust, and a lot of other mods for going fast. I really miss the talon and I am hoping to sorta compensate my speed fix with the 240sx. What are some expected results if I were to put a s15 motor in a hatch body chassis and ride it mainly stock as a daily driver. Searching didn't really seem like it helped me with these questions so I'm asking and hoping people will take me seriously.

peace

you are better off getting the S13 Blacktop SR20DET for two important reasons

-1. high-port cylinder head. slap the S15 turbo on that engine and the S15 SR20DET wouldn't even matter anymore (of course, injectors, MAF, and ECU tune would be a must as well). the S15 VTC becomes a little wishy washy past the 350 mark, so S13 SRs are for power hungry drivers. the average is $1500-2500, which out of the $3000 you would have spent on an S15 SR, would be better allocated for injectors, MAF, ECU tuning, and a turbo. again depends on your budget

-2. its chassis specific. its simpler to bolt in and wire up. besides, the 6 speed is nothing special and your speedo would need to be modified to fit the transmission or you would need the S15 diff.

case in point : S13 SR20DETs are the more reasonable investments for your 180sx. S15s are more money for the same performance. if your pockets are deep, get it so you can brag to your friends. if performance is your forte, the S13 SR is your weapon of choice.

i know this might already have ben disscussed but is a s14 motor worth buying over a s13? i own a 1997 240sx, i know the s14 motors have VTC on the intake side but i hear arguments that some aftermarket cams disable VTC and in general VTC on the s14 is oveerated? my future plans is to swap for a sr20, larger turbo maybe s15 but keeping the car very relyable for everyday driving and some weekend track time. my goal realistically is 300hp range, i just want relyability and response. can someone give me their side on this? would it be worth it go s14 motor with the VTC or find a s13 motor? btw the turbo on the s14 isnt the selling point for me its the VTC i just wanna know if its worth it.

Blackpearl, what jdm-masterx is saying actually makes sense, well some of it at least ,,,lol.. putting an s15 sr into the s13 chasis would be alot of headache and custom work and it is gonna cost you alot, besides you really dont need to spend soo much money ( trust me on that i have an s15sr) besides you can gain about the same performance with either an s13 black top or a s14, with a lot less headache while installing it. as far as the high port goes, lots of the ppl get rid of that by replacing the intake manifold to a greddy one which is a low prt design and also if the s13 sr was so high and mighty why did nissan replace it with the notch tops ? my advice, go with a black top s13 cheaper fits your car good, easy wiring and all the other stuff. upgrade the turbo, and you have some happy times es-14since you have a s14 i'd say go with a s14 sr , vtc is ok and fun , but once you decide to upgrade your cams you'd mostlikely get rid of vtc, all it is, is just a newer engine with newer and better engineering. was designed orginally for your chasis.

thats why a lot of people use the S13 SR even in the S14 because of that VTC. the VTC was nissan's compensation to a lower flowing head. the turbo is physically larger and more capable of producing power, enabling faster spool. But its only a 20-50 HP difference. the S14/S15 idles more stable because the ECU decided to let the motor lean out at idle, unlike the S13s secondary air injection which is disabled when swapped into USDM chassis.
