(My story)
I have been researching these cars quite a bit recently and there are some things I am questioning. I've found a Kouki 1997 on craigslist that seems to be pretty decent for what I want it to do. I drove a hour away to see it in person and test drive it. A few things need to be addressed before I think about purchasing the car. I own a few other cars so this won't need to be my reliable daily driver or anything. I just want something I can put my hands on and give it my personal style. 240's seem like they are everywhere and the affordable to tune or repair.
(The motor & chassis details)
First off i'll explain what I know about the car and what I could tell from driving it. It seems that all the details about the miles was spot on (120k miles) chassis and about (6k) miles on the rebuilt motor. I brought a friend that has owned and been around 240s some and he said that the car was tuned really well. The vehicle started right up and it had been setting for maybe 2 weeks and it idled nicely. We only drove it on the street for about 15 minutes because it isn't tagged or insured but the car pulled nice and all. The car has full coil-overs and upgraded 300zx breaks, stock differential and "3 exhaust all the way back. There is a boost and oil gauge, also a 30sec turbo cool down timer. I saw the dyno papers and the car had 271 hp. Other features include upgraded transmission, stage 2 clutch, short throw shifter and a BOV
(The body)
It's in some what rough condition, the front bumper looks pretty good however the side skirts are not very flush and imo the rear bumper is ugly and has some damage. There is also a large dent on top of the roof that can be seen in the photo below but no other serious body damage, it looks like a new bodykit and paint would do wonders. I'm not into the whole rice burner look I like clean cars with a "race look". The fenders have been cut and rolled but they actually did a good job. Axis rims (WTF why are they blue?) I know. The seats are from a 300zx and the interior is pretty clean but not perfect or anything.
(Questions)
-Think the car is worth what it's going for? ($6,500) I'll of course try to get him to lower some but who knows.
-The bad thing was it definitely smoked when the turbo kicked in. Could a bad turbo gasket lead to this as he stated? No smoke on idle.
-Think a vehicle like this would pass emissions here in TN? On this year they stick the computer up to it right? Not just a sniffer. Nothing tells me it won't but i'm not sure about it being built/turbo'd. I'll probably try to run it to marta before I purchase it if possible. The county he lives in doesn't require emissions testing.
