The 240 is really a great car, with a few things to watch out for, especially on the 1989 and 1990 models, with the timing chain, etc. I won't rehash that aspect, as you can search for it quite easily above, and find information far more detailed than what I could offer.
With regard to it being your first car, I say go for it. I got my 240 almost a year ago, and it was my first car, after having driven my mom's 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora (4.0 liter V8 makes many Hondas angry, hehe, too bad it was FWD and handled like a boat). I live in Connecticut, and we get some pretty bad winters . . . I made it through this past one with the 240, in bad conditions, with very bad, somewhat bald, Cooper Cobras. The 240 is a great car to learn the aspects of RWD, in my opinion . . . when it starts to slide out on you, it's very easy to recover (compared to cars like the MR2, or even things like a 300ZX).
Plus, it really is a ton of fun to drive, probably more so than almost any Sentra or 200SX out there (no offense to the owners of said cars, ;-)).
