I have wanted to black out the chrome on my frontend for some time now and after gathering together some spare parts over the summer, it is now time to commence!

Stage one is the primering and painting of the headlight surrounds...

First I threw the surrounds in the sink and cleaned them up with a S.O.S. pad:

Almost look too pretty to paint???

Hold on...these are in worse shape than the one's I'm going to be taking off and polishing up...so don't worry!

Nice coat of primer:

Worse shape I said...I must have been mistaken! These are beautiful!

Notice the many reflections from the flash?(they show up as white spots!)

If it were true stainless it wouldn't have rusted!

But hey, the true reason I'm doing this is that in the winter here in Washington, cars kick up quite a bit of crud and I wanted to take off the good chrome and polish it up at my leisure but still wanted a decent looking truck as the cops around here would pull me over just cause they thought it was a hunk of junk with missing pieces and all...

wow! was that a run-on sentance!

Chrome for good weather and Painted is for winter!  Sounds simple huh?

and this is my 151st post!  My favorite proof!

You are right, sir. Prompted by your response I dug through my spares and pulled the worse one out. I had thought that it was just rust stain from the nearby metal work, but on close inspection, I see the pitting.

WOW...It sounds like your spares are better than my good ones!

my bad one's that I have just painted are severely pitted and it took 3 coats of primer to fill in most of the valleys...

Looks good to me! I was gonna have mine sandblasted & powdercoated when/if I ever got ahold of a set in better condition. I have since changed my mind & when I stop being lazy &/or have enough money to have it built, I want a billet phantom grille that will cover all 4 lights as well as take the place of the stock grille.

I've found there are different grades of stainless and the lower grades will rust, but dang those covers looked nice before and after. I'd like to have the bumpers on "lil-Dat" re-chromed but I'll stick with the black for a while. I will probably paint the grill to match until I can afford a re-chrome. 71-521, when you hit 521 posts you have to stop posting! I have to quit at 320 :dude:!!!!!

Oh chitlins! I guess I have to make every one count then, huh?

But then again, I could always just reset my post count now couldn't I?

[font="georgia"]Paul, looking good. I wonder how they would look if you sprayed that anodized spray paint over them, its a real transperant paint that comes in green, red, & blue.
