Yep you can put a lawn mower muffler on, or similar. I know a few people on Oki who did that.

The reason for an open WG (besides cheaper manufacturing) would be for more power and better boost control. Having less exhaust in the exhaust system (less back pressure) increases performance. Routing the WG external helps reduce that back pressure. Having a restriction free route for the exhaust going thru the WG to exit helps with boost control. If the exhaust is fighting to get into a DP, then you may not be able to bypass enough exhaust to keep boost under control.

Keeping those things in mind, if your looking at some muffling device, make sure its fairly restriction free.

Or don't muffle it.

DUMP is good. You like it, it likes you. Better for performance, and scare off ricers and litle old ladies.

If you run a longer dump tube, it kinda "tunes" the note...makes it a little less loud, and smoothes it out.

See here for my S14 KA-T:

That was when I first installed it...it's welded better, cleaned, and painted now.

Here's an outside pic:

See it poking out under there?

Routing it past the driver's seat sends less nasty fumes into the cabin, FYI...

just be carefull when using a lawnmower type muffler. i tried 3 different types and they all caused boost creep anywhere from 2-5psi over what my spring was set at. i finally said screw it and ran it open for a while and now i have it recirculated and i like it much better.

Well, its not referred to as OPEN WASTEGATE.. You mean open DUMP on the wastegate. (just being an a55 right now, just ignore me)

Anyways, I ran open dump on my external wastegate and it was the LOUDEST, most annoying sound i have ever heard. Me, id prefer to run open downpipe off my turbo than to run open dump on my wastegate.

I eventually routed my dump back into my downpipe to quite it down and it is now nice and QUIET and have ZERO boost creep...

One thing, if you are gonna route it back into the exhaust stream, try to get the dump tube to ENTER the exhaust stream at a 45 degree angle or less, that way the wastegate dump gasses will merge with the turbo gasses nice and smoothly. If you route it back at more than a 45 degree angle, u run the risk of boost creep. ( I would know from PERSONAL experience..!! )

I was wondering when someone was gonna catch that. Atmospherically dumped wg or open dump wg (as previously mentioned) is the correct term. Running open wastegate on the other hand, is having no boost control and allowing the turbo to build as much boost as it can (not smart at all). It is simply done by removing the vaccum sources from your wg. This is what I've always known as "open wastegate".

I too have my wg dumped to the atmosphere. I love it. Sounds much nicer than the typical dumped wg. All I get is a nice forceful sound of rushing air.

Anyone consider a Dump setup similar to the "Top Secret GT-300 Supra" ?

With a smaller diameter pipe, same idea less the decals and bodykit
