If i sell a car and the buyer leaves the title open, given that i signed the title and he has it, can i be held responsible for anything that happens with the car?

yes you can be liable so what you need to do is fill out the form that absolves you of interest in the vehicle. In WA, the title has a little slip at the bottom that you fill out and mail in. I bet there is a form like that for your area that you can mail in.

Yes, you can be held liable. A Bill of Sale will protect against that. Either that, or some type of written proof that he took possession of the car.

thanks everyone, i went to the DMV and they said they have a sellers affidavit form i can fill out that we both have to sign, which puts the liability on him and shows he owns the car should anything happen in the future.
