I would consider a different dealer if they charge $60 a shim. They list for $17 through Courtesy. Still expensive for guesswork. Last time I shimmed an R200 diff, I was lucky enough to be at a shop that had a bucket of shims sitting around.
Installing the internals from a VLSD isn't difficult to do, it's just a long process of test fitting. Get some prussian blue from a local machine shop and use the service manual to read the ring gear teeth for proper meshing with the pinion. I also recommend finding a way to use a corded drill to spin the diff. In the past, I've used a cot off socket extension to drive the impeller shaft. You want to avoid using anything that is impact style as it causes the teeth to bounce around. A smooth rotation is necessary to test the gear meshing. You can spin it by hand if all else fails, but I've found that if you can get it up to speed, you get a slightly better read out of it.
