I am looking at starting to do some online stock trading. With everything being down, and I have some money saved up, it seems like a good time to start thinking about doing some investing. Since I am a self proclaimed DIY-er, I figure I might as well give it a go on my own.

What do you guys think is the best online trading firm right now? I'm pretty much a newbie at this kind of thing, but I figure the only way to do it is to try it. I have a nice little kitty of cash stashed away that I would like to grow, however even if I lost it all I wouldn't be up a creek without a paddle.

Any opinions?

I worked at Scottrade for over a year, and still do all my trading through them. I like them a lot as a company, both to work for and as a broker. Also, they have many local offices where you can get help. Not advice on what to buy, but how to do what you want, and lots of online tools. They have some of the lowest commissions, and lots of features.

Thats just my .02, but I've also never used another broker.

Whatever you use for trading, Finviz.com is my favorite for research. More charts and ratios than you can shake a stick at, for free.

I also use Td Ameritrade they have really good support and i love their "trade architect" feature. I can't really speak for any other online brokers but TD had been really good. They have 24 hour online and phone support 7 days a week. Also they have free online classes and ones you can pay for once you get more advanced.

Finfiz is awesome for charts, research and analysis to look at fundamentals. If i can suggest a few things. I don't know your level of experience, but you might wanna do a little mock or paper trading before you dive into the real thing.

Here is a great webiste for tutorials and had real time market simulator. They give you 100K to start and you buy and sell and see how you do.

Also TD also has a paper account you can use to get some experience.

Also, there is another website chat room where other traders hang out and share ideas. There is one chat room on this site that every night at 8pm central time a guy names Big W will get on the mic in the chat room and go over charts with people and give his honest unbiased opinions on stocks and macroeconomic news and indicators.
So far his advice has earned me almost $1k in about 3 weeks.

Sign up go to the chat rooms. There a few different rooms. Big W hnags out in the "large Cap"rooms. Every n trading night at 8 central go there and listen to this guy. When the time comes for him to look at charts give him the Ticker and he will go over all the fundamentals with you and give his opinion about the company.

Good stuff that's free and helpful.
