I finally got my engine back from the machine shop. I had the entire rotating assembly balanced out including the crank, flywheel, pulley, rods, and pistons. I was pretty surprised to see how off the weight of the Arias pistons were right out of the box. A total of 14 grams were taken off the various parts of the motor.
The machinist was a cool guy, he showed me how they do the balancing of the crank, flywheel, pulley all together and how to balance the rods & pistons. Pretty cool stuff.
I also found out what destroyed my last motor.... The last flywheel i had on that motor was VERY warped and out of balance. The shop that assembled my last bottom end didnt reccomend a balance since it was a 4 cyl with 5 main caps..... but the ka's have a girdle.... so once the machinist put the old flywheel on his balance machine it was pretty messed up and out of balance. I had a spare flywheel so i resurfaced it and he balanced that one just fine.
He had to add a bit of weight to the crank counter weights on each end.
On with the pics.
here's the balance sheetHere's where he shaved off a bit of metal to balance the ends. This is a pic of the Arias pistons after balance.... He removed a total of 7 grams from 3 of the pistons to make all 4 the same weight.Took a bit out of the flywheel...and the crank pulley.
I will continue to update this thread as i assemble the motor.
