For those of you all too young to know this, just assume us old fogeys know what we are talking about when we say that the car chase scene in the movie Bullitt was one of the first and finest ever. It set the tone for car chases in later movies.

Apparently Steve McQueen did much of his own driving in the movie, chasing a bad guy through the streets of San Francisco. He drove a 1968 Mustang ... two were used during filming and one has apparently been found in Mexico, although long believed to have been crushed!

A wonderful piece of history: http://www.motortrend.com/news/long-los ... in-mexico/

Cool! I love that chase scene. It's very raw... and long... and gratifying! Sold to Mexico for a few pounds of yay maybe? Glad it was found I guess. Or better yet, in the hands of someone who's willing to restore it. I bet it won't be driven as hard this time around.

Yeah, it was good, but I always thought that car should have been faster - especially with McQueen at the wheel.

I mean, how many times did we see that Beetle...the thing kept passing him off-camera! :chuckle:

FWIW, I always thought Bill Hickman's stuff in The Seven Ups was better. It probably got overlooked because it wasn't that different than normal, everyday driving in New York City.

Ummm, maybe ... but I have driven those streets in San Francisco and would be in deep trouble if I was going that fast on those steep sections.

it's a great chase. Close runners up will be the entire Vanishing Point movie, and the chase scene in The French Connection.
