I successfully used a spray called "airplane remover" several years ago to remove paint from a motorcycle wheel. After a few minutes, the paint bubbles up and wipes off. Someone put something on the wheels of my 240SX before I bought it that caused parts of the finish to peel off or "crud up". I bought a can of Tal-Strip II paint remover to strip off the paint from my 240 wheels. Has anyone used this before? Will it be safe to strip the finish with the tires still on the wheel? Will it harm the rubber. It says not to use on wood, and not receommended for plastic. No mention of rubber. Basically I'm going the cheap route and don't want to pay $40 to remove/re-mount the tires on the rims. Once I clean off the old clearcoat, I'm using a can of clear high-temp engine enamel to put a thin coating on the wheels. I'll probably use some masking tape to mask off the tires for paint stripping/re-coating. Thoughts?

spray it on your neighbor's tire and see what happens. hehe. J/K. If you have an old tire or something, you can spray it on there and see what happens to it.

I have always wondered the same thing. Parts of the prtective coating are starting to chip off. For now I have been using some acid to remove grime from my rims. It works very well, but It has to be sprayed off imediatly. Anyway, I look forward to finding out how your wheel refinishing turns out.

I thought about it a while longer and came up with another means to do it without removing the tire. I will lay the wheel/tire flat on the ground, outside facing up. Let all the air out of the tire and then press down on the inner part of the tire until it pops free from the rim. I can then slide in some cardboard between the tire and wheel! Once I'm done, I can load them all up into a buddy's truck and have the tire dealer put ait back into them with their high powered air compressor since they need to be balanced anyway. I assume they won't charge me extra to fill them with air!
