A few weeks ago my gauges died, they did nothing, the milage got scrambled also, Checked all the fuses, relays etc, Could not find a issue, I bought a used cluster, stuck it in, it worked fine. Today i went to start my car, it got stuck like it had to much compression or something, turned off the key and it then started fine, it does this once in awhile. But after i did that the cluster milage was screwy again, the guages still work at this point, also when this happened i lost my power locks and remote key fob functions, I pulled all the fuses and checked them, all good, after that the power locks worked again as did the Keyfob, the cluster mileage is still scrambled looking and i do not know what is causing this, I have checked the alternator voltage to make sure it was in check and it is, thinking high voltage caused it, but note the case.

I am lost, i do not know what is killing my gauges, Does anyone have any input on this issue?

PS: <I also heard of a term called micro fretting which may be a cause> But i am not sure at this point.

Check and see if your alternator is putting out enough voltage first

Yeah everything checks out, I am still at a loss, My one cooling fan has been acting up and making alot of noise, I wonder if it seized up for abit and caused a short and somehow caused the issue, I got a new one installed and all seems fine but my gauge mileage is still scrambled.

So something is cooking a component on the circuit board, i found this out by swapping parts one at a time from a working cluster.
Here is a pic of the problems, First Pic is the voltage regulator and Mem chip for the mileage, the mem chip seems to cause the most issues. Its a EEPROM to be specific.

Just the cluster apart in various pieces.

Area where mem chip is soldered to board.

So now iam still not figuring out what is causing the failures to occur, I has to be the alt but i cannot see a failure there as the tests are good and monitoring the voltage on a long drive is stable.
