On a scale of one to ten, ten being extremely difficult, what number would be used to describe replacing the steering rack and pinion an a 87 300ZX in my garage at home without a lift?

I'd say 3.

For several reasons: It's pretty accessible (2 brackets and some lines), you only need a jack, jackstands and basic metric tools, and you have the foremost Z31 expert in America living right here in Phoenix (AZ Z-bum) in case you get in over your head.

We're here to help as well.

wear goggles also, have a container to catch the p/s fluid, some flare nut wrenches will help w/ the fittings.

It's usually REALLY DIRTY down there, gross gross gross. Good luck.

it's easier if you have an engine lift or at least an engine support frame to lift the engine an inch or 2, the extra cleanance makes the job a LOT easier! also it's a good idea to replace the tie rod ends while you're at it as you'll need an alignment after anyhow, and please remember to use only Dextron ATF, power steering fluid id too thin and causes half the problems these racks have
