That oil change? Turns out every 5,000 miles is often enough. New oil has chemicals that eat away the catalytic converter, says Donny Seyfer, a Colorado-based certified master technician, and changing oil too often can damage that pricey part."

This is a quote from an article titled, The auto service Up sell scam . Its found in Smart Money. It details the the collapse of the $130 billion auto service industry since last fall. Apparently people are postponing service as well as buying autos.

I use Amsoil every 7500 miles and will go to 15,000 once the drive train warranty expires. I traditionally have changed dino oil every 5000 miles. My thinking was at 3000 miles the lube shop was in the business of selling oil and at 7500 the factory was in the business of not letting the car last too long.

I'm sure Z may find this information surprising.

Got questions:

"New oil has chemicals"

- What new oil - Synthetic or other, weight, high mileage oil, what is new oil to this individual?

- What chemicals? Detergents? Some sort of additive? All brands?

I'm not sold on such general statements by an online article with no details. Here's the full article: http://finance.yahoo.com/famly...autos

Till I see the screams from the ricers & big block tuners that their cats are going bad left & right, I'll stick to what's known over a certified mechanic. Have an oil industry and fluids chemist/engineer speak on the topic & I'm listening.

At 3000 I can see the color is no longer rich honey and granted it is without an oil analysis but... I'm confident a change is safe and reasonable to do. Besides with this 4.5 burning it like it does, though a little, 3000 keeps me on top of consumption.
