not sure whats different about them but according to driveshaft shop an abs driveshaft wont work on a non abs car, idk if maybe the diff is a little closer to the front or maybe the transmission is a little bit longer. i do know that when i ordered my driveshaft it was a big deal on wether it had abs or not.

Auto and manual are different, but I think its only the front half. Try just using the new shorter rear section with your old 5 speed front section.

ok so i did that. and it still feels as if there was no change in the feeling of everything bolted up. like it was just as tight and snug as before with the old rear section.

So it worked? Why where you swapping out the drives haft in the first place?

yes but it was just as easy of a fit as my shaft was before i changed anything. it almost as if the parts were identical and didnt change the shaft length at all. cause i put it on as easily as i took the original shaft off. idk what the deal is. but reason for me changing shafts was because my j30 dif is an ABS UNIT. so it supposed to mean i need the ABS shaft as well. which i find this not to be true. or well in my case. but i also dont know what and abs shaft feels like when its all bolted up. i mean like how snug and how much play is in the shaft.

The reason why you need an ABS shaft is because it is slightly shorter than a non abs shaft. And since the J30 diff is about 1/4 inch closer forward, the shorter shaft (by also about 1/4 inch) works perfectly.

Just as a clarification, the difference between an auto or manual drive shaft is not necessarily the length... or where the center joint bolts up. Its the inner teeth that dont match up when mated to the transmission.

As for the feel of the abs driveshaft, well it feels identical. Wouldnt really be able to tell. I have the same setup on my RB s13. The reason for the high strength rubber material on the ABS shaft is for the rapid cease and continuation when ABS is engaged. A slight play so the shaft itself doesnt break.

Just my 2 cents..

so youre saying the picture with all those rubber things with the bolts on it connected to the transmission is an abs shaft? because thats my original one thats been on the car since i bought it which my car is non abs. the abs shaft is the pic with the red circle on it.

Yup, 100% its an ABS driveshaft. That is the setup for j30 to fit properly.

the first pic is of an s13 shaft, and the second pic is of an s14 auto shaft.

Well this is what happened. I bought it from a guy on CL. Which said it was for an s13. So i go to put the shaft in. Then doesnt fit. So i call him and he says its for a auto s13 then he bullishts me and says i cant get a refund since he lied to me. So then i was told to swap the rear sections, which i did. And it fits the exact same. So now im out 30 bucks. And i just got my stance bushings for the dif. So now im on the lookout for another abs 5speed shaft.

Sorry bro, ive had 3 s13's in total. My first was an auto w/o abs. Didnt have that rubber piece. And my 2nd and 3rd were 5 spd's (non abs). Didnt have that rubber piece on those either. And if i remember correctly, i did a swap on a friends that DID have that rubber piece... at the time we werent sure why, and im positive that his was abs. I'll check with him for clarification...

Gonna go w/ CA on this one... 100%

Oh and to add one more thing MOTOMAN399
And your statement of the 2nd driveshaft pic being from an s14... I thought that was weird cause it looked similar to my s13 auto (collar). And costarican13 states the seller said it was from an auto s13. Guess your fail twice... 200%

First of all J30 vlsd was a waste of my hard earned money. Second way way back when I did my swap I had a J30 vlsd in an S14 diff and all I needed was the S14 bushings to complete it. If my memory serves me, the bushings just unbolt from the diff (maybe with a little persuasion).

UPDATE*** i did not have to cut it instead i used a bigger socket from a socket wrench. it was 15/16. and just put that up to the bushing and then hammered it out. thanks for all the help guys! and i guess a mod could delete this thread or save it for other ppl in the future that may find it useful.
