totally fine... I've done it a couple of times when tired... as long as you dont have some wonky tune, F/I, or a track day coming up you'll be cool. If you really want peace of mind throw some octance booster in the tank till half a tank then filler er up with premium

And definitely never buy yourself a diesel. I believe putting gasoline in a diesel engine is more dangerous than putting diesel in a gasoline engine.

Indeed, I have a diesel van... thank god I have never been so careless as to put gas in...

As others had said, this will not be a permanent problem to be concerned about.

Just drive gently - without hard accelerations (try to avoid the pinging ... that is a sign of engine knock being prevented by electronics!) till you get a chance to re-fill with Premium. Be gentle for a tankful or two.

We have an 08 m35s. Is it a problem if we use 87 octane. It says premium recomended not required. Are we going to hurt or car?

I have an 07 M35x and buy 87 octane at Costco whenever it gets above $4 per gallon. I haven't found it makes any difference in gas mileage. I asked a technician at Infiniti for his opinion and he said as long as it doesn't ping, I can run 87 octane, but it may get build up on the plugs and injectors faster than if I used high octane. When it gets above $4 I buy every other tank low and high.

Recommended means lower octane will affect performance (where it actually doesn't on most cars). Required means lower octane could cause damage (but, according to the manual, driving gentle can prevent that damage if you must use a lower octane because no proper octane is available). You should be fine running 87 in your m35s this thread was started about an M45 because the M45 has the "required" terminology.

About two years ago I was on a trek through North Carolina on my way home from a match in Virginia. As usual, I wait until I really really need to stop for fuel and this time, I ended up at the only station open in the middle of the night and every pump was Ethanol fuel. I had no choice coz god knows how many miles I would have to drive to get to another station, so I added just 3 gallons to get me back on the motorway. It did no damage, and I topped off with 93 at the first station I could find. I also have to say ... if you don't want to pay an extra 5-10 pence per gallon, why didn't you buy a different car that actually runs fine on 87? To me, if you buy an M, you should be prepared to pay for 93 octane fuel and maybe save money by driving it less, or more gently, or cutting back on other things to negate the added expense of the fuel. One less night at the pub per week, or one less extra pay channel on your cable bill should do that nicely.

OP, Too funny!!!! I was thinking the same thing.... NO NOT DIESEL  but really, it's no big deal.... Just go back to your routine when this tank of gas goes low... You could drop in an octane booster in the gas tank also!
