I am holding my older Brother's 1973 Datsun z280(he's currently deployed overseas) and recently moved to a seedy neighborhood. Returning from a 2 week trip- I find my garage has been broken into and my brothers precious Z almost stolen!
The would-be thieves managed to tear out the steering column and mess around with the electrical plugs, cross the negative and positive battery terminals and break the drivers side window. What they couldn't figure out was the switch to turn on the electric fuel pump in the car! They must've given up after some time- little consolation to a severely messed up electrical system...
Trying to start the car-
1.)Battery replaced
2.)the electric fuel pump is directly wired to the battery(NEW) and turns on properly.(No idea why it is directly connected(not even a fuse on it!)
3.)There is an aftermarket Electric Coil Ignition Unit(Fireball? I think) under the hood. The status light goes in and out of red.(It's suppose to be green)
-Unsure if this is a bad unit or a problem with the power connection...
4.)the starter makes no sounds.
-The steering column cover was removed and a BUNCH of wires are randomly unconnected and/or connected. Thankfully none of the wires were cut...
5.)I get a slight buzz when I insert the key. The electric ingintion coil status light is solid red(indicating error). Headlights and interior lights are on. As soon as I turn the key in the ignition- the electric ignition coil status lights goes out, the slight buzz disappears but the lights stay on.

Anyhow- I am novice to auto repair- but have time, a quick brain and am very motivated. I may be over my head- but the car has A LOT of sentimental value to my bro. so I have to try.

My first inclination would be to somehow find the wiring diagram for under the steering column and troubleshoot the starter OR try and corner the electrical failure somehow...
It may be a lot to ask- but any suggestions???

firs fo all what year is the car? you said 73 280 and that doesn't exist, more importantly is the car injected or carb'd?

is the distribulto points or electronic or aftermarket? or aftermarket electronics inside a points distributor?

check fireballs website for instructions and figure out what the led means
