don't think I've ever heard of an aluminum diesel, maybe it's just shiny new steel.

anybody ever seen an aluminum diesel motor?

I don't think there are any aluminum automotive diesels but this is sort of a whole different ball park. On that scale alluminum might be the metal of choice...

I dunno, I don't think aluminum would have the longivity wanted when making an engine of that size for a boat. Sure it'd be lighter, but I bet that'd be a ***** to work with on that scale with it being a softer metal.

Man that'd be crazy if it was a turbo diesel, just started thinking of the size of the turbo that sucker would have.

Wouldn't be as big as the one on my civic though, get me dawg!?

it is turbo deisel. the previous thread on this had a pic of the whole engine assembled. i think each cylinder had individual turbos

It doesn't look turbocharged

likely that warehouse is at a shipyard so its easy to put the motor in. they prolly build most of the boat around it.

u cant see the turbos from that side. if u go here it shows a diagram of the engine that shows the turbos on the opposite sied http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsshb/12cyl/

I think I spent about an hour searching on the web and still don't have a clue what the block is made of...

I let em borrow my engine hoist when they need to move it. Wiseco even makes overbore pistons for it.

seriously though, does that engine just kinda run at 100rpm? Thats all? Its a serious stroker i know but only 100rpm? Diesel engines just kinda cause the fuel to detonate therefore not needing a sparkplug? How does that work? I'm gonna have to read up on them now. So much for watching a movie tonight

I reckon it's kinda like C4 and works on an impact type thing, the fuel is just combustable when compressed.

don't stomp on C4 kids

and now you know, and knowing is half the battle. YO JOE!!!

Actual diesel combustion looks like a flame thrower. The fuel ignites almost immediately after squirting out of the fuel injector.

mmm, kinda. the fuel itself isnt too combustable until its under great pressue. and even then, you cant spark it. they use glow plugs, kinda like a spark plug, only they get really hot. when the fuel is compressed to 16/1 or so(for a way smaller engine) the plug provides the heat to ignite the mixture. diesel engines dont rev up to high, but they have crazy compression, so they have massive amounts of torque.

In a Diesel, only air is compressed. Fuel is not injected until the end of the compression stroke.

Glow plugs are only used for starting and warmup. Once the engine is hot, the fuel burns pretty much on its own, as it is injected directly into the cylinder at near top dead center, into air that has been compressed mad hot (more than 18:1 CR, plus turbocharging)

I'm not merely speculating diesel combustion looks like a flame thrower. I've seen it (via slow motion photography and a glass cylindered diesel)

MrFox has it there... The fuel is injected VERY late in the compression stroke AND directly into the cylinder, Not into the intake manifold like most gas cars.

It wouldn't surprise me if it ran at only 100 RPM... Those 18 wheelers on the street don't go above 3k, and thats only, what, 15 liters?

yeah, they dont go to fast, and they spool those turbos FAST!

ever seen the pikes peak Mercedes Semi run?

crazy stuff, I can't remember the guy's name that built it though, but he did do stunt driving for the training videos they show at the CDL learning centers.

Never heard of it, but sounds real cool... But out of the Mercedes semis I've seen I think their ugly.

yup, it just the heat of compression that ignites the diesel fuel in the cylinders. the compression ratio is way high.

i thought my old powerstroke had pull. 275hp/520lbft@1600rpm, 3500rpm redline, 6 speed manual. 2001 ford F450 tow truck.too bad i wrecked it. at least it wasnt mine.
