4.0 Cherokees.

they're pretty bullet proof.

How about a Volvo V70 or XC70?
Good gas mileage, plenty of utility, reliable I-5, and a taste of luxury.

Bronco 2 is an amazing utility vehicle that'll run (seemingly) forever. Gas expense is there, but the truck is worth it.

My dad has an old Dodge Ramcharger (the precursor to the Durango) with the wimpy little 318, and I've gotta say, it's a pretty tough little truck. The guy who owned it before us is an old friend and he used to haul a big tow-behind RV into some of the most God-forsaken places without any trouble. Shortly after my dad bought it we went 4-wheeling down what we thought was a Jeep trail. It turned out that we had actually went down a 4-wheeler trail. The old truck got us in and out without any problems. It's not pretty, it's not very fuel efficient (like 20mpg highway... at best), and it's not luxurious; but it will take anything you can throw at it.
