All this would do is make 18 year olds the highest risk, and send unexperienced drivers away from their neighborhoods where they would be most comfortable learning. It is a very big paradox is it not?
On the subject of the elderly, it is not necessarily because of age that their reflexes get slow. I've met a few old people who didn't look and almost hit me because they couldn't see through the steering wheel. However, there are other elderly who aren't the least bit of a risk. I've met many more like them. After age 65, when you begin collecting social security, you should go through another driving test to see if your reflexes are up to date. I am not "bashing" elderly people. There is much we can learn from them, and share with them. However, many of them are unsafe on the roads and are giving the rest of their age group a bad name.
My points exactly. There are good young drivers and good older drivers. I was saying to not lump all of them together, because they're not all the same. Often what the elderly lack in response time they more than make up for with the ability to see a problem coming and avoid it before it happens. This isn't true in all cases certainly, but often it is.
And believe me, I've been stuck behind the old guy wearing the fedora and doing ten under in the left lane while driving his (insert name of luxo-barge here). It's frustrating as hell. Everyone should have to abide by the same rules of the road and being old is no excuse to not follow them. The older and more experienced you are, the better you should know the rules, right?
And dammit, I can't see Buud's pics...
