has anybody experienced any issues with the new Xtronic CVT and is it better in terms of reliability? I don't care about performance, I care about reliability. Many trans shops won't rebuild or don't know how to rebuild them. If I'm no longer on the warranty, where can I go to fix it, or should I go to Nissan for a new trans and how much would that cost?
How do you do a drain and fill on the Xtronic CVT? The dipstick is really hard to deal with and open, and where is the drain plug? Thanks. Any links on how to DIY it? just put in what came out and you won't overfill, as if you overfill, that won't look pretty.

Should I do my first drain and fill at 30k, and how many quarts would I need? Ns3 is expensive and is 19.99 a quart!

a lot of your questions can be answered simply by using the search function. i can tell you, no one will rehash everything thats already archived on this site(rogue section).

as far as i am concerned, the old first gen cvt was pretty sketchy. the new one should be a lot more refined. but i dont know if the rogue got the new cvt yet. i think its still the old one.

No, its the new one. It is much more refined, smooth, and less restrictive

Folks,

Based on all the horrible stories, and my own experience with the CVT, I have a question about the newer models and this trouble prone transmission. Has Nissan finally managed to get the design of this transmission right, or is this still a ticking time bomb in the newer models?

If they have not really made major design changes based on the years of failures reported how can this not still be a problem?

Just curious as I wonder if Nissan will still be in the game when I look to replace the current vehicle.

rowlands57, can you elaborate on your own experience with Nissan's CVT? I'm wondering what vehicle and year, your driving requirements (city/freeway mix, towing usage), style (heavy on the gas or light on the throttle, etc)? Reason is not all CVTs are equal and people's experience can vary based on that as well as how they drive.

The CVT in the 2017 is the same one that's in all of the 2nd gen's, starting with the 2014 model. Merged with existing topic. Please read the previous posts. Thank you.

My advice: If you think it's a "ticking time bomb" then I would STRONGLY urge you to buy a different vehicle.

My experience is with a 2011 Rogue. The transmisison went into limp mode at just past 100,000 miles and eventually I had to replace it with one from a 2013 that had about 40,000 miles on it. Changed the fluid when installing the replacement and it was good for about 15,000 miles and the dreaded whine was coming back.

After a lot of research I discovered that the cooling was the issue and that the cooling on these units is inadequate for extended highway driving or in very hot conditions. Not that I am hard on a car by any means but I do drive on highways in and NY summers.

Anyway, I ended up finally retrofitting an external cooler, for now it seems to be working well. I cannot understand how Nissan decided to drop the extended warranty at the 2010 model year if there was no significant update to the units. The 2013 had the same 'cooler' that did not have ports for piping the transmission fluid to the external cooler so I cannot see how it was improved from 2010 on?

I am certainly not alone in this camp as there are plenty of other issues reported here, and all over the web for that matter. Just trying to determine if Nissan has done anything to put this issue to rest once and for all.

So, I honestly had the same concerns as you. As I love my Select and would like to be able to replace it going forward with another Rogue, but was wary due to the lack of an aux cooler.

So to start answering your questions.
Nissan only brought up the original extended warranty in my eyes as good PR. While the 2011+ isn't very different the CVT has had internal upgrades overtime I'm sure to make it more resistant to heat. Nissan also changed up the CVT fluid from NS-2 to NS-3 I'm sure also bringing some slight improvements along the way.

I added the cooler to my Select at about 40K, and asked my father who is a mechanic to take a look at any new Rogues he got in at work while they were on the lift to see how Nissan has set up CVT cooling on them. When he took a look at a 2016 Rogue apparently they're routing the cooler lines direct from the CVT into the radiator, like most conventional automatics. While still not the ideal it's far better than what the first gen Rogue had, and also makes it easier to add an external aftermarket cooler because you don't need the cooler "block" with four ports that was required on the first generation.

Thank you FantomLightning. That's good to know that they have taken steps to ensure proper cooling. I suppose that this is the common method on many other makes as well because I have seen this same setup on plenty of vehicles.

I suppose the only dilemma now would be the addition of an aux cooler while inside the warranty period. Oddly I can see someone arguing that by improving the situation you have voided the warranty.

I'm sure that's the first thing they'd go after with a warranty issue. The only reason I did the cooler on mine inside warranty is because it was a Nissan OE part.

If I was in your shoes/and or buying one myself the way I'd play it is this. Drive it for 60K possibly do a flush at 30K if you feel you fall under the "severe service" description. Otherwise drive it to 60K so the PT warranty is up, do a CVT flush and install an aux cooler then not touch it again until probably 120/135K. If you got 100K on the first generation with no maintenance, then 60K shouldn't be much of a concern with the new one with no extra cooling. I'm personally not sure the aux cooler would be very necessary/beneficial with the new CVT, but regardless the cooler you keep a transmission the longer the fluid and trans are going to last. So if you are the type that wants to keep your vehicles for a long time, I'd go for it.

Only benefit to the short Nissan warranties are you don't have to wait for long before you don't need to worry about voiding them with modifications.

I have a thread where as I started hearing a whine 2 weeks ago and I am getting a new cvt as we speak on an 08 with 105,000 on it. I brought it in yesterday and they said I needed a new one and it was fully covered. They even rented me a 2017 Rogue until mine is done.
