called up the local junkyard guy today. told him ive got yet another crx to give to him (ive given him like 9 total plus other cars) and telling him what car im giving him he already knew who i was and where i lived, and i talk to him about 2 times a year. anyways

noticed in a sport compact car mag that saab 900 turbos came with a t3 so i asked him if he had any in the yard. he said yeah he does and i asked him how much he would want for me to rip one out and he said free. i like that answer

so i went down (no tools in car for once) and took a lookie-c at this saab and sure enuf its a turbo model. turbo is there along with intercooler and everything. i asked him if i coild take intercooler with it as well he said sure. so tomorrow im going down to get the turbo and intercooler from the car. so no i dont have turbo yet.

problem is i was just reading about the saab turbo making shur they are infact internally wastegated and if they are i gotta learn how to work with that and what not but in anycase i found out theres 3 diff turbos that go on that car. 1)garrett t3 oil and air cooled 2)garrett water and oil cooled and 3)mitsubishi te-o5 (i think) water and oil cooled

now seeing how i dont know yet which turbo it is these are general questions about all 3. 1) is there anytning in particular i gotta pay attention to or should know about putting the turbo on a sohc ka (besides shaft play and used condition) 2) what is your (anyones) comments on using a saab turbo for minimal power (7-10 psi more then likly 8 at most) and i do have a whole idea planned out as far as fuel managemnt and such, im just asking about this turbo and what ppl think, info on it and anything.

what's wrong with internal wastegated? with your ka24e, I don't think you'll be seeing high boost anyways so you probabl;y don't even need external wastegate

oh nothing wrong with an internal wastegate, just if it is internal then i have to get a mani without the external port, and i also gotta learn how they work so that i can understand it better.

well got one answer i was looking for, im gonna weld the internal wastegate shut and just go with a tial instead. gets rid of boost creep and definate possible boost spike at wot.

what is your power goal? if you are running below 10psi, an external wastegate is probably overkill

really? i had never known that or even had a hint of that. hmm thats something to think about now..

in any case got the turbo off the saab, it says ar reasearch or something similar. i didnt clean it all up yet so im not shru about the whole thing but so far i know its a .42 on the intake side, and both shafts have play. next is what to do with it, either rebuild it or clean it up and make it a nice shiny heavy paper weight depending on how much it would be to rebuild (ill check into that later today)

if what u say is tru loveless, and im not saying its not but ill have to look into that, then i might just keep it internally gated for my low power goal, and to save money

What year is the car?Well, if it's got lotsa shaft play, I smell a paperweight..but for reference sake:pre 90 saab 8v = 40 trim T3(garrett)pre 90 saab 16v = 45 trim T3(garrett)'90+ saab 9000 = T25 .80/.68(garrett)

yes, if it has a lot of play then u could get a nice rebuilt t3 or maybe a t3/t4 for the price of a GOOD rebuild. i'm running a similar turbo to the one u might have. it's a .48/.42 t3, pretty small. but it was rebuilt before i bought it in a half kit so i went with it. now as for working on a sohc, it works great on mine. oh, and i don't go over 7psi yet cuz i have no tuning or bigger injectors in yet. but u better believe that an external wastegate is handling the job. no spiking or creeping at all.

Guys, the newer turbo´s in 9000, 9-5 and 9-3 are better if you can find them instead..They use Mitsu turbos there, better spool up and last forever, top quality.

You can also find bigger Mitsu models in Volvo 5-cyl but they use T3 flange.

They are all internally gated and this works very well, a good rule is that the WG works fine up to the hp limit of the turbo. The large TD04-19T in Volvo can push 370 hp and the internal WG works perfect, sometimes a stiffer actuator is a good upgrade but not needed.

Just loves these turbos and I´ve used them in Nissan for 7 years now.

A Teil WG is $250 plus. A lot of coin for a low boost rig.

That turbo would need a compressor upgrade to be any good = $200

Plus a rebuild is about $300. Then there is the issue of the exhaust A/R.

yeah i had called a couple of places about a rebuild and they told me that i could pretty much buy a rebuilt one for the price of the rebuild which sucks in a way.

so ill clean this one up and keep as a paperweight or mount on my wall for decoration and just get another one either new or rebuilt.
