okay i got my 5 speed swap and my cluster was reading like 2 times faster than the speed i was driving. my mechanic said someone must have took the speed sensor off the transmission i bought and swaped it with the japanese one when they did their sr swap. so okay. i finally got a speed sensor. installed that sucker and same problem. two problems it can be. 1. the guy who sold it to me probaby gave me another japanese one. or 2. some other problem. oh yeah it can't be my cluster. i have two cluster and tried both and i still get the same problem. please i need as many opinions and help on this. this problem is making me mad becasue i cant drive on the freeway with a cluster on.

once again thank you guys very much for all your help.

Steve

The pick up wheel in the transmission has the wrong amount of teeth on it, only thing it can be if the cluster is not the problem. The sensor in the trans is a frequency generator. If it generates a wave to fast It will show up on your cluster [ if that makes sence to you]. try another pick up is all I can reccomend. Do you know anyone with a 240 you could borrow it from? First do this, disconnect the pick up on the trans[attached to the tail housing of the trans on the right side] and drive it. If it gives a speed reading it is getting its signal from somewhere else. that is a whole different can of worms if it does do it.

well its me again. i dont wanna make a new thread on the same topic so lets see... i havnt found anyone that has another pick up wheel to swap but i can wait until the socal meet in june. i got a check engine light and it showed #82 which is the crankshaft position sensor, my rpm reads fine, could this be the reason why its reading my speed 2 times faster? if so, any suggestions? thanks a lot nistech =).

No that code is only for a OBDII monitering sensor, the sensor does nothing for engine control or operation of any driver information systems. It is mearly used to see if the engine misses. The code means it is either seeing a irratic signal or it has an open or shorted circuit.

how did you do your wire swap? did you splice or change the harness?

hmm I was thinking you might have spliced something wrong but that isnt the case if you swapped it.

Did you ever disconnect the pick up on the trans and see if the speedo still registered while driving?

no not yet. currently still in school. so i havnt had the time. im thinking of doing it right after my finals which is exactly when the so cal meet is. what can be the problem for the #82 then? thanks for you help.

can you tell me a bit more where the pick up wheel is at and how it should look like. the pick up wheel is on the right side of the tail housing so im guessing its near the speed sensor. and how will it look like (its missing teeth so im guessing it looks like a gear) but when you mean disconnecting it, im assuming you mean the connector or something? let me know. ill try to just disconnect it and see what happens. shouldnt take that long. thanks

What you think is the speed sensor on the trans is what I am calling the pick up wheel. just disconnect the electical connector plugged in to it. If there is no connector right on it follow the harness till you get to one and disconnect it. Then take it for a spin.
