First of all thanks you rico for convincing me to go ca. read some of your threads. I already have a s14 with sr and s15 front end but im selling it. I recently got a cheap s13 but it has a high milage ka24e and im not feeling it.

Ok i guess my questions are-

How reliable is the motor

Whats the best place to buy one from

I really dont care about this one but how is the aftermarket support

And lastly how hard is it to get oem replacement parts.

Thanks everyone.

if you rebuild it then it won't break. other than that, the ca18det is an old motor and people have thrashed the **** out of most of them. it's bound to have some issues. although a few people here have had some luck with just tossing one of these used motors in and romping on it with no problems. as for finding a motor. i would try here first zerothread?id=136449

by the way. oem replacement part info can be found in the "Welcome to the CA18DET forum! READ THIS BEFORE POSTING!!! FAQ's/Links/Tech Info" thread. that's where i got the link so you can find a motor.

How reliable is the motor - luck of the batch really, think about how much you want to depend on a 15-16 year old motor ripped from a car or cut from part of a car in japan. Reliability increases dramatically though if you replace parts / do a good job checking the motor out and rebuilding as necessary. My motor's oil pump went bad ~150 miles after installation. Definite things i'd replace would be oil pump, water pump, timing belt, thermostat, and clutch all with OEM nissan or better. Things i'd definetly check would be main and rod bearings, and flywheel while your doing clutch

Whats the best place to buy one from - I got mine from Jhot exports, there pretty good. Any good, reputable jdm engine vendor should work, jarco is an exceptional one if you can get it from them.

I really dont care about this one but how is the aftermarket support - Weak, this wasn't a concern to me however becuase i'm happy with fmic, exhaust, fuel and more boost, all which aren't specific to the CA, but rather 240sx which is plentiful. If your planning on rebuilding with aftermarket rods, pistons, valves cams etc, it'll definetly be tougher than an SR. Things CA specific, like a flywheel, are very hard to get your hands on aftermarket ones.

And lastly how hard is it to get oem replacement parts - kinda difficult, while most parts are a cross from the 88 pulsar nx se, i highly doubt a dealer will regularly stock these parts. 2 of the crucial parts i needed that prolonged my swap install where on backorder, and almost every part the dealer had to order and i had to wait 3-5 days. Backorder parts included oil pump, oil pump gasket and timing sprocket front plate. if you do your homework, know how everything works, and get the motor 100% ready before you start the swap (unlike me) you will save yourself so many headaches. Go OEM nissan for replacement parts, even the thermostat.

CA was cheaper for me, and I love it being iron and lighter then the SR, but at certain times the SR would have been a better choice mainly because reliability, but after everything is cleared up and running, you gotta <3 the 18
